A Visit to the Elkton Reserve

Kellogg, OR–April 24, 2017. A 410-acre tract of private land call the “Elkton Reserve” at the end of Fern Road, SE of Elkton, has been in the hands of a few conscientious stewards for more than four decades. I was invited to visit the area to discuss birds, landscape management, and other opportunities of interest at the reserve. We did quite a bit of looking and talking so I didn’t take many photos, but in one very small pond we found a stranded egg mass of Northwestern Salamander, which we put back into a shallow, part of the pond. It was also fun to see some heavily browsed crab apple, and some elk. Despite a fair amount of looking under quite a few pieces of wood and bark, I didn’t find any other herps.

Northwestern Salamander (Ambystoma gracile) egg mass
Pacific Crabapple (Malus fusca)
Roosevelt Elk (Cervus canadensis, ssp. roosevelti)
